History
Around 2500 B.C(5000 years ago) lived a famous Pandya king by the name Sadaya varman Sundara Pandian. The king had no children and worshiped his kula deivam Sri Thirumal iruncholai Kallalagar requesting for the boon. The Lord ordered him to stay in Thirukoshtiyur and performed kainkaryam at the temple. the king followed the words of the lord and stayed in Thirukoshtiyur for 64 days starting from the tamil month Thai. He fulfilled his viradham on a full moon day of the tamil month Maasi. The lord was happy with the king's kainkaryam and gave him the boon of child birth and prosperity to his kingdom. In remembrance of this occasion the king created a 11 day theppoutsavam in the tamil month of Maasi and donated several villages for the temple maintenance. He also brought several panditsto chant the four vedhas and made them stay in a village later named as Chathur vedhi mangalam.
The inner meaning of Theppoutsavam is the theppa kulam represents the jeeva samugam which is created by Sriman narayana who protects it from the inside and outside. The theppam or the float represents the bhaktha's hiruthayam(heart) and the swami within the theppam is the Antharyami(the lord who resides with in). Every year lakhs and lakhs of people assemble at Thirukoshtiyur for this celestial event. It is believed that one who takes the sacred lamp(vizhaku) from the theppam and wraps it on a yellow cloth and worships the lamp at his house is blessed with all the boons. Once the wishes gets fulfilled the devotee comes back to the temple with the lamp and leaves additional lamps as per their wish.
